PULLBACK
Sometimes called a 'DRAG' BACK, this move utilizes the sole (cleats) of the shoe to "drag" the ball back towards the new direction, in one swift pivoting motion.  The "turn-away" pullback is slightly different from a 'Cruyff' in that it uses the sole of the foot to drag the ball backwards.

Key Point:  Be sure to pivot with the ball as it is being 'pulled back'... escape with pace!

The 'Pull Back' should not be used anywhere near one's own penalty area or anywhere in the middle of the field where an alert defender could begin a dangerous breakaway.

THE STEP-OVER (HALF ZICO)
Lunge type move which involves a stepover like the scissors but in the opposite direction.  Plant your left foot behind and to the left of the ball and swing your right foot around (or over) the ball in a counterclockwise arc, from the outside right around to the inside left.  Then push off your still planted left foot to the right, and take the ball with the outside of your right foot.  Accelerate!

Push ball forward, step over ball with one foot, turn toward ball and take it in the opposite direction.

STEP-OVER

HALF ZICO
Another slight variation is to take the ball back with the outside of the right foot instead of using it as a pivot foot.  Here you fake the "stepover" as you turn counter-clockwise over the ball with the right foot, just as before.  Then instead of planting that right foot, you just tap it down and then back up as you begin to pivot back clockwise still on the left foot.  Then you take the ball with the outside of the right foot (the stepover foot) and move back in the new direction.  Personally, I prefer this variation.  We think it is quicker and a little easier to do the pivot with cleats on grass fields.

KEY POINTS:  The move becomes effective when the "stepover" looks like a shot or pass or lunge in that direction.  This "sells" the "FAKE" and then you take the ball quickly in the other direction.

FULL ZICO
ZICO/ STEP-OVER 180 TURNS start with the ball between your feet, as it is during your "in-betweens".  Put your weight on your left foot as you swing your right foot up and over the ball (turning counter-clockwise towards the left).  Plant the right foot down on the left side of the ball and step down.  (This is the "stepover" part of the move and will be used in lots of fakes and feints).  Now using that right foot as a pivot, spin (turning clockwise this time) around with your left foot, back towards the ball.  Once you have turned a 180, take the ball with your left foot and begin to move in the other direction.

Arthur Antunes Coimbra (born 3 March 1953 in Rio de Janeiro), better known as Zico), is a Brazilian coach and former footballer, who played as an attacking midfielder.  He was a creative playmaker, with excellent technical skills, vision, and an eye for goal, who is considered one of the most clinical finishers and best passers ever, as well as one of the greatest players of all time.  Arguably the world's best player of the late 1970s and early 80s, he is regarded as one of the best playmakers and free kick specialists in history, able to bend the ball in all directions.  In 1999, Zico came eighth in the FIFA Player of the Century grand jury vote, and in 2004 was named in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.  According to Pelé, considered one of the best players ever, "throughout the years, the one player that came closest to me was Zico".

THE BACKWARDS 'L'
The PULLBACK "L" or UNDERNEATH 'L' is the sister move to the "V" move.

Three-step move.

  1. Fake kick motion up onto the ball.
  2. Drag backwards with the sole (cleats) to prepare the ball for the tap underneath.
  3. Tap with the inside of that same foot that redirects the ball underneath the support leg and into the new direction.

INSIDE CUT (TURN)
Dribble forward by touching the ball a little forward.  Plant one foot to the left or right of the ball two- three feet, faking a kick with the opposite leg, bringing it down and with the inside of the foot in a 'chopping' motion to cut (or push) the ball backwards to the outside of your body.

OUTSIDE CHOP (sometimes called a 'Highway' turn)
Dribble forward by touching the ball a little forward.  Plant one foot behind the ball two- three feet, faking a kick with the opposite leg, bringing it down and with the outside of the foot  in a 'chopping' motion to cut the ball backwards across the front of your body.

BEARDSLEY
Begin with your right foot on the ball with your cleats touching the top.  Scrape your foot to the left to set the ball into motion, rolling to the left.  Then stop it for an instant with your left foot, before you quickly "scrape" it again and get it rolling again to the left.     The Beardsley is sometimes referred to as a "Hip Swivel".  This move works well down the wing to find space for a cross.  It also works at the 18 yard line to make room for a shot.

BEARDSLEY (Stop & Start)

STOP & GO
Stop the ball with the bottom of the foot, and with push with the opposite foot to go!

Peter Andrew Beardsley (born 18 January 1961) is an English former footballer who played as a forward or midfielder between 1979 and 1999.  In 1987, he set a record transfer fee in the English game and represented his country 59 times between 1986 and 1996, once as captain, taking part in two FIFA World Cups (1986 and 1990) and UEFA Euro 1988.  At club level, he played for Newcastle United, Liverpool and Everton, having also had spells with Carlisle United, Manchester United, Vancouver Whitecaps, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Fulham, Hartlepool United and the Melbourne Knights. He was briefly appointed as the caretaker manager of Newcastle United in 2010.

The Magic of Peter Beardsley

CRUYFF
Push the ball forward, fake kick with inside of foot, but instead pull ball behind the standing leg and change directions.

One step move that uses the inside of the foot to "chop" the ball underneath the support leg in a radically new direction.  The key is setting up the support leg in the correct position, and also swiveling the body a little, to make room for the ball to pass beneath the leg.

Note that the sole (cleats) are not part of this move.  Furthermore, Coerver and Vogelsinger often describe the "fake kick" motion associated with the beginning this move, and then that same leg "chops" the ball underneath the support leg.

Hendrik Johannes Cruijff, internationally spelled Cruyff; (25 April 1947 – 24 March 2016) was a Dutch professional football player and coach.  As a player, he won the Ballon d'Or three times, in 1971, 1973, and 1974.  Cruyff was an exponent of the football philosophy known as Total Football explored by Rinus Michels, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history.  In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dutch football rose from obscurity to become a powerhouse in the sport.  Cruyff led the Netherlands to the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.  At the 1974 finals, he executed a feint that subsequently was named after him, the "Cruyff Turn", a move widely replicated in the modern game.  Wearing the number 14 jersey, he set a trend for wearing shirt numbers outside the usual starting line-up numbers of one to eleven.

JUGGLING

PURPOSE
Juggling is designed to promote, encourage and challenge our players to spend more of their free time juggling.  As we all know, juggling is an integral part of player development.  It is also a known fact that all good jugglers are not necessarily good soccer players, but it is certain that all good soccer players are good jugglers.

We want to encourage our young players to make juggling a habit because:

  • Players develop better overall ball manipulation skills
  • Players develop coordination, balance, reaction speed, learn to use both feet etc.
  • Players can set and achieve goals (personal juggling record) and also develop good work/practice habits and determination to reach those goals

FIRST TOUCH = FIRST CLASS
We have come a long way over the past year as a soccer club, and each player has made great strides to seek excellence in their improvement on the soccer pitch. In order for our players to be successful, it is important that we really refine and improve our first touch.

Here are some activities to help promote the process of improving your first touch as a player.  Each one of these will be useful to help increase your juggle count, but also to help you with your technical receiving, and skill on the ball during training and matches.  Try some of these out with a regular routine and your first touch will greatly improve.

THE ONE-BOUNCE GAME
Players juggle but are allowed a bounce in between each touch. It is important to make sure that you use both feet.  This is a great activity for those players just learning how to juggle/improve their first touch

Modifications:

  • Alternate feet
  • Take a bounce juggle twice with the same foot, and then bounce, then juggle twice with the opposite foot, repeat etc
  • Juggle foot, thigh, then a bounce, then switch feet/legs
  • Juggle foot, head, thigh, foot then a bounce and switch legs/feet

REGULAR JUGGLING IDEAS

  • Juggle Feet Only
  • Alternate right to left foot
  • Around the world - this is a hard one!  Start with ball on right thigh, then right foot, to right shoulder, to head, to left shoulder, to left thigh, to left foot, back to right thigh and then repeat
  • Juggle feet only, keeping the ball below your knees
  • Juggle feet only keeping the ball below your shins
  • Take one to two touches (start any touch progress to feet only) then knock the ball to head level, then receive, take one to touches then hit the ball to head level again
  • Take one to two juggles, knock the ball over your head/find it, then take the ball out of the air(without a bounce), and continue the process with one to two touches, then knock the ball over again

JUGGLE SEQUENCE GAME
Players will begin with one juggle with either foot, then add one more juggle with the other foot, then switch back to the other foot, and add another juggle. Keep on going as high as you can go.

Example: Right foot = 1, Left foot =2, Right foot = 3, Left Foot = 4 and continue

JUGGLE AGAINST A WALL
Take one to two touches, and hit a ball up against a wall and or a hard surface. Then, receive the ball out of the air without a bounce; take one to two touches again.

Modifications:

  • one foot only
  • alternate feet
  • touch to the wall must be headed
  • must receive the ball out of the air feet only

SCISSORS
Lunge type move using an inside to outside stepover.  Start dribbling with the ball between your feet.  Plant your right foot next to the right side of the ball and swing your left leg around the ball in a counterclockwise arc, from the inside (right side) of the ball to the outside (left side) of the ball. This is an "inside to outside" stepover with the left foot.  Then plant that left foot down and take the ball back to the right with the outside of the right foot. Accelerate!

There are two versions of this scissor type motion.  The one described above when the stepover move goes out and around the the front of the ball is a "front side scissors".  You can abbreviate this motion and do the stepover motion mostly behind the ball and it is a "back side scissors".  They both work well if you don't just swing your legs around but actually try to fake the change in direction.

SIMPLE FAKE or SHOULDER FEINT
The DUMMY STEP MOVES work standing still or at a dead run.  Start Dribbling the ball forwards then abruptly lunge (take a long deep step) with your left foot, to the left of the ball.  Plant your left foot hard and take the ball back to the right with the outside of the right foot, on the diagonal.  Accelerate . . . . FAKE and FLY!   . . . . Backbone of other Soccer Feints, . . . the Scissors, the Rivolino, the Mathews, and the fake kicks are all 'lunge-type' moves.

Simply put, . . . Fake with inside of foot nudging ball by dipping shoulder, then take ball in the opposite direction with the outside of same foot... Explode!!

MATTHEWS
A.K.A. the INSIDE OUT MOVE or 'TOUCH & GO', Touch the ball 6 inches with the inside of one foot (Little touch!).  Hop away 24 inches sideways from the ball with the other foot (Big hop!). Turn your chest and shoulders a little away from the ball before to enhance the fake before playing the ball away at a 45 degree angle in the opposite direction to the fake with the outside of the original ball playing foot.  Explode for 5 yards to finish.

Dribble forward and then with the inside of your right foot, touch the ball slightly to the left, as if you were going to cut that way.  Instead, push off the left foot and take the ball back to the right with the outside off the right foot.  It is essential to add a "little hop" to the left (with both feet) when beginning this move while you are lightly touching the ball to the inside.

Sir Stanley Matthews (1 February 1915 – 23 February 2000) was an English footballer.  Often regarded as one of the greatest players of the British game, he is the only player to have been knighted while still playing football, as well as being the first winner of both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards.  Matthews' nicknames included "The Wizard of the Dribble" and "The Magician".

Matthews kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old.  Matthews was also the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division (50 years and 5 days) and the oldest player ever to represent the country (42 years and 104 days).  He was also an inaugural inductee to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 to honour his contribution to the English game.

PREKI
Half Preki:  Begin with a little lean or lunge out to the right side of the ball by lifting your right foot and stepping down lightly beside the ball.  Do not put any weight onto this right foot.  Instead shift your weight to the left and plan to "scrape" your cleats over the top of the ball, from the right side to the left, to begin it rolling to the left.  After the ball has crossed completely in front of your body, use the inside of your left foot to touch it forward around the defender.  Accelerate!

Full Preki:  This move begins very much the same as above, but after the drag roll to the left, add a "step-over" (a Rivelino-like move) with the left foot - then as the ball continues to the left take it away with the outside of the left foot.

MARADONA
Push ball forward, stop it with the sole of one foot while stepping past it, turn and drag ball back with sole of other foot, continue turning all the way around and take the ball with the inside of the first foot.

360 or SPINNING MOVE, three components- 'Stop, Hop and Spin'.

  1. Dribble the ball forward and then stop it with the sole (cleats) of your right shoe by briefly putting your foot on top of the ball.
  2. Hop that same foot over to the other side of the now motionless ball. For an instant, you have "straddled" the ball.
  3. Spin (counterclockwise) over the top of the ball and as your left foot reaches the ball pull it with you by scraping across the top.  This will cause it to roll with you as you complete the spin to face the original direction.

Diego Armando Maradona (born 30 October 1960) is an Argentine retired professional footballer.  He is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award.  Maradona's vision, passing, ball control and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature (1.65 m or 5 ft 5 in), which gave him a low center of gravity allowing him to maneuver better than most other football players; he would often dribble past multiple opposing players on a run.  His presence and leadership on the field had a great effect on his team's general performance, while he would often be singled out by the opposition.  A precocious talent, Maradona was given the nickname "El Pibe de Oro" ("The Golden Boy"), a name that stuck with him throughout his career.
